Recycle. Reuse. Reduce.

Love our planet. Repurpose.

This year has seen me get in touch with my rather dormant eco-warrior. Instead of Swampy, mine would be rather aptly be called Sleepy!

2019 has seen us as a family unit attempting to adopt more environmentally friendly ways. Part of the curly girl journey is exactly that, possibly without even realising it.

To begin with, we tried to limit our plastic waste by purchasing reusable sandwich wraps for our packed lunches. I also purchased reusable fruit and vegetable bags for when we are out shopping. I try to make wiser choices, picking items in glass or aluminium as opposed to plastic. Wherever possible we recycle. Try and reuse and repurpose.

I did exactly that with fabric too. Some old t-shirts cut up for scrunching, plopping, drying cloths. Some people have bought these already made. I, included, have purchased a jersey plopping hair wrap. But, now there are several t-shirts less heading to landfill.

More than 300,000 tonnes of used clothing goes to landfill in the UK every year, according to Wrap, the waste charity.

It’s not just about the fabric now not making it’s way to those landfill sites. The curly girl method leads us to a “healthier” use of wash and style products.

Many of the products that are curly girl approved have botanical ingredients, organic ingredients and have ethical ethos behind the product range.

With the no sulphate or alcohols we are taking out some chemicals that will end up within the water cycle or even our natural waterways, effecting our animal, fish or bird communities. This I feel also goes doubly so for the silicones in non CG products.

Silicones are ingredients widely used in skin care, color cosmetic and hair care applications. Some silicones, notably the amine functionalized amodimethicones, are excellent hair conditioners, providing improved compatibility, feel, and softness, and lessening frizz.

Silicones are a plastic in nature and are non soluble. This means they do not break down in water. I can’t help but think that in time silicone washed down our plug holes isn’t going to cause some kind of issue in the not so distant future.

I notice now I use silicone free products my drainage from shower is better. In past a slimy gunk would build up, blocking the flow of waste water. This would need to be physically removing.

It’s gets you thinking…
