The next curly generation.

This week saw what was possibly the most meaningful compliment I could have heard.

I work in a secondary school, for overseas readers this is what is termed a mixed comprehensive. Both boys and girls, aged 11 to 16 years old.

I was walking the corridor with a year 9 student, she would be about 14 years old. She is a delightful student who very much thinks and cares for others.

She turns to me and says,

“Miss, can I ask you a question?”

I reply with,

“You can ask, I might not necessarily answer though.”

“Your curls are beautiful, can I ask what products and how you use them please, my friend has curly hair and loves yours, but is too afraid to ask.”

All I could say is,

“Find me when we have more time, bring her along and we’ll all talk curly girl and the method!”

I am a mother of son’s. One thing I feel quite resentful in life, is that I will never be blessed with a daughter. Not even a niece. That female bonding, or lack of makes my heart ache a little. Whilst I adore and love my son’s with all my being, there does feel like something is missing.

This corridor moment, gave me a sense of pride. It opened my eyes to the fact I can guide and help girls, that aren’t my own. I can help the next generation of curly girls coming without them having any biological connection.
