No scrubs.

Actually this is untrue. It’s all about the scrubs.

One of my favourite little buys recently is my scalp scrubber. I co-wash, mainly daily as I haven’t quite got used to just refreshing, but I am working on getting my technique and products right so I don’t need to wash my hair so frequently. It’s a comfort and freshness feeling for me. I am hoping as my hair becomes more healthy the psychological need to wash hair will dissipate. I do think it’s routine too. When you always do what you’ve always done, it can be difficult to change.

Co-washing is a conditioner only wash, even just this small change, daily, is better than using stripping shampoo. I know my curls are healthier for it.

This is my routine now. First I cup water on to my hair. This is sometimes referred to as the baptism wash. The reason for this is water is not pulling down on curls constantly. Also water does contain elements that may effect the hair and it’s condition. Once sufficiently wet through with this baptismal splashing I then use my CG approved conditioner. I apply to scalp area and scrub. And scrub. And scrub a bit more. Till my arms and fingers ache. Then I scrub just some more. This scrubbing has taken toll. So I invested in a Denham scalp scrubber!

I still use my fingers to scrub and massage as I don’t feel so much of a cheat then! And it feels really nice.

Once I have scrubbed for getting on for five minutes I rinse off. Squelcing out the conditioner, I try to do this as gently as possible to preserve the curl pattern as much as I can.

I apply fresh conditioner and finger comb out any tangles, which I can say since starting this journey have been very few of. I squelch this conditioner in from ends up towards roots. It’s called squish to condish! STC! When hair is like seaweed hanging. I go about my shower routine.

I rinse out at the very last moment, using the baptism or cup method with water. I don’t wash out all of the conditioner. I always leave a slight feel of it coating hair but not scalp.

I then style. I use an old cotton tea towel to squish out excess water. I do not rub hair. I apply generous mousse all over squish it in and take excess out with tea towel. The allow to air dry.

Once dry, a cast forms, the crusty mousse feeling. This is then scrunched out. SOTC. Or scrunch out the crunch!

Voila! Beautiful curls. All being well!
